Obituary for Agnes D. Olson
Agnes D. Olson 97, formerly of Frederic, WI, died Tuesday, June 19th, at the United Pioneer Home in Luck, Wisconsin. She was born September 25, 1909, to John and Almeda Erickson of Trade Lake Township. She grew up on the family farm, attended Round Lake School, and graduated from Frederic High School in 1927. She then went on to attend Superior State Teachers college. After two years she accepted a job in Deer River, Minnesota. Besides teaching all eight grades she had to walk two miles to school, and start the fire to warm the school before the children arrived. She enjoyed her experience teaching in the northern part of Minnesota, but after one year returned to the area and taught at Wolf Creek School. It was 1934, the midst of the great depression when Agnes married Phillip Hedlund. To this union were born three children. Phillip farmed near Round Lake and they survived the worst of the depression, but when her youngest child was only two weeks old Phillip died suddenly, leaving Agnes with three young children to take care of. Money was short, and in 1943 she resumed her teaching career teaching at Bass Lake and Trade Lake. In 1945 she married Robert Frank Olson, and one child was born to the couple. She and Robert had a farm in the Trade Lake area where they raised their family. Agnes returned to teaching in 1950 teaching at Round Lake and Trade Lake. In 1959 Agnes was widowed again. In 1965 she took on the care of her sister's orphaned son, she returned to school, got a degree in Library Science and became a librarian at the Grantsburg Schools. Agnes loved teaching and especially enjoyed teaching history and mathematics. She retired from teaching in 1976. After retirement she volunteered at the Frederic Library, the Polk County Museum, was an active member of the Zion Lutheran Church of Trade Lake, and loved her scrabble club in Frederic. All her life she was an avid reader and enjoyed traveling, making seven trips to Europe and many trips around the states. Her mind remained sharp, and until the last she could play a really mean game of Scrabble. Agnes was preceded in death by her parents; her husbands, Phillip Hedlund and Robert Olson; her sisters, Mabel Schultz, and Gladys Farrand; one grandchild, Kristin Hedlund Fulton; one son-in-law, Leroy; and daughter-in-law, Brenda. She is survived by her children, John Douglas (Sandy), Marliyn Hedlund Hagen (Kenneth), Phyllis Hedlund Betts, and Betty Olson Linden (Charles); thirteen grandchildren, Karin, Karl, Kirk, Kathy, Keith, Kelly, Joleen, Joel, Bethine, Daniel, Patricia, Benjamen and Nathaniel; fifteen great grandchildren; two neices, Lois Anderson and Janice Hedlund; and two nephews, Kendall Farrand and Neil Hedlund. Funeral services were held on Friday, June 22nd, at the Zion Lutheran Church of Trade Lake with Pastor David Almlie officiating. Interment was at the Zion Lutheran Church Cemetery. Rowe Funeral Home of Frederic, WI, was entrusted with arrangements.
