Obituary for Alice Elizabeth Gustafson
Alice Elizabeth Gustafson, 100, resident of Trade Lake, WI, died Thursday, February 9, 2012 at Frederic Nursing and Rehab in Frederic, WI.
Alice Elizabeth Melin was born February 21, 1911 to Gust and Adelia (Peterson) Melin in the Trade Lake area. She died at the Frederic Nursing and Rehab. in Frederic on February 9, 2012 just short of her 101st birthday. She was the oldest of 10 children.
She grew up attending the Trade Lake #3 and Alabama country schools through the 8th grade. She was a domestic worker in St. Paul for a few years before marrying Arthur M. Gustafson on April 26, 1933. They were married at the parsonage of the Trade Lake Baptist Church. They farmed together for 10 years in the Trade Lake area before moving to Frederic in 1944. She worked at Hagberg's Dept. store, Stokely-Van Camp and Duncan Yo-yo before working as a cook at the Frederic Hospital and Nursing Home and then getting her GED at the age of 64 in order to be a Food Supervisor.
Art and Alice had 2 daughters, Marlene and Marlys.
She lived in the area all her life and was 95 years old when she went to the Comforts of Home in Frederic for 2 years before living at the Frederic Nursing and Rehab.
She was a member of the Trade Lake Baptist Church all her life and was very involved as a Sunday School teacher, and the Womens Ministry. Faith, family, friends and food were important in her life. She enjoyed entertaining with coffee and other treats. She was well known for her pies, raisin rye bread and of course chocolate chip cookies for the grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Arthur; sisters, Eunice Asper, Ethel Anderson, Myrtle Cooper, Irene Anderson; and brothers, Harold and Wilbur Melin.
She is survived by daughters, Marlene Gustafson of Amery, Marlys (Bob) Elrod; 1 granddaughter, Katelin Edwards; and grandsons, Michael and Matthew. She had 1 great-grandson, Dominic. She is also survived by 1 sister, Mildred Lundgren of Cushing; and 2 brothers, Rudolph and Charles of Grantsburg; cousins, Warren and Glenn Melin; and many nieces, nephews and friends.
Funeral services will be held at the Trade Lake Baptist Church on Tuesday, February 14 at 11:00 a.m. with one hour of visitation prior to the service. Visitation will also be held at the Rowe Funeral Home in Frederic on Monday, February 13 from 4 to 7p.m.
