Obituary for Bernice V. Asper
Bernice V. Asper was born to Harry and Christine Johansen on April 1, 1920. They lived in the Luck Township and she attended North Star School. She graduated from Luck High School in 1938, valedictorian of her class. She went on to Minneapolis Business College and graduated. She had several office positions before marriage to Verdie S. Asper on December 23, 1942. Verdie was in the U.S Army and was part of the Normandy Invasion. He died in France on July 16, 1944. Daughter Vickie was born December 20, 1944. Bernice died peacefully with her family present on September 9, 2007 at the Frederic Nursing Home. Bernice and Vickie lived with Bernice’s parents and moved to Frederic in 1950. She worked for Indianhead Dry Cleaners, Thorp Finance, Rudell Motor, and the Frederic Telephone Company. Then in 1963 she became editor and reporter for the Inter-County Leader. Her first week there was the week when President Kennedy died. She worked at the Leader for 30 years. Bernice was a lifetime member of St. Peters Lutheran Church at North Luck. She helped with Luther League, sang in the choir, was involved with the women’s organization, served as church treasurer, and was Sunday School superintendent for 30 years. Her community service included the following organizations: Frederic Municipal Hospital, Frederic Development Corporation, Western Wisconsin Health Systems Agency, Polk County Board of Supervisors, Polk County Health Council, and Polk County Jury Commission. She was Frederic Citizen of the Year in 1980. She was a lady that blended family, community, and her faith into every day of her life. News stories involved facts but she remembered that people were part of the story, and she was committed to telling their story right. She enjoyed connecting with people from the local communities to governors and U.S. representatives. She is survived by her daughter, Vickie, and her husband, Mark Johnson. Grandchildren and great-grandchildren are Karin Johnson, Jennifer Mishler, her husband Les, and their son Curtis Mishler. Grandson Bruce Johnson, his wife Sarah, and children Chloe, Dean, and Erika complete the immediate family. Extended family includes many dear cousins, nieces and nephews, and friends. Funeral serices were held Thursday, September 13, 2007, at St. Peters Lutheran Church in Luck Township with Rev. Mark Hall officiating. Visitation was held Wednesday, September 12, at the Rowe Funeral Home in Frederic. Pallbearers were Rollin Asper, Sanford Johansen, David Jorgensen, Doug Panek, Dale Skow, and David Stephansen. Soloist was Sharon Pilsner and organist was Carol Winchell. Rowe Funeral Home of Frederic was entrusted with arrangements.
