Obituary for Betty R. Schmietendorf
A very sweet lady, Betty Ruth Jones Olson Schmietendorf, passed away at Traditions of Frederic, on December 2, 2014, with her brother Harold at her side.
Betty was born in St. Paul, MN on December 23, 1925 to Harold Sr. and Clara (Twining) Jones. She grew up on the East Side of St. Paul and graduated from Harding High School in 1943. On a summer vacation near Stone Lake, WI she met Jack Olson and they were married on May 1, 1948. They made their home on the north side of Chicago near the Swedish Community of Andersonville. Betty was a secretary for the Sauganash Community Church for 26 years. Betty and Jack never had children of their own, but six nieces and nephews were very important to them and she was Auntie Betty to them and several other children and friends. In 1976 Betty and Jack moved to Russellville, AR for more country living, hunting and fishing. Jack died suddenly in 1992.
Betty became more involved with her church and became better acquainted with another member, Martin Schmietendorf. They were married on April 15, 1995. She then moved across the river to Dardanelle, AR. This marriage gave Betty two step-daughters and two grandchildren, they all brought so much joy to her life and a feeling of completeness. Marty died in 2001.
Betty moved back to Russellville and downsized to a duplex with thoughts of moving to Frederic, WI. In November of 2004 that became a reality and she always said it felt like coming home but she missed the opportunities of shopping in a larger city. (Her Arkansas friends thought she was crazy to live in the snow and cold.) Betty quickly settled into the community and took in everything there was to learn about the area. She enjoyed coffee and breakfast with the girls, helping at church, Bible Studies, playing 500, reading books from the library, feeding the birds and watching TV. She loved living so close to her brother Harold and wife Kathryn and she found another niece and nephew with Kathryns children, they all enjoyed many special times together. Betty moved into Traditions of Frederic in 2012 because of declining health, the result of a stroke in 2009. Betty was very caring and was always interested in the other person and how they were feeling. She will be missed by many and so many reciprocated her love and attention back on her.
She will be dearly missed by brother, Harold Jones and his wife, Kathryn; step-daughters, Paula (Roy Schlaudt) Schmietendorf, Pat Brown; grandchildren, Elisabeth and Conrad Schlaudt; nieces and nephews and their families, Pam (Dennis) Johnson, Christine (Rick) Thompson, Mike (Bonnie) Kohl, Robert (Anne) Jones, Laurie (Bill) Sutko, Patrice (Steve) Wienke, and Bob Arundel; step-nieces and nephews; great-nieces and nephews, cousins and many friends.
A Memorial Service will be held at Pilgrim Lutheran Church in Frederic, WI on Saturday, December 6th - visitation will begin at 10:00 a.m. followed by the service at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Paul Peterson officiating. Organist will be Mary Lou Daeffler and special music will be provided by Jerry Baxter. Burial of the ashes and a graveside service will be held at a later date in Russellville, AR.
An online guestbook is available at www.rowefh.com or www.wicremationcenter.com . Arrangements are entrusted to Rowe Funeral Home of Frederic, 715-327-4475 and the Northwest Wisconsin Cremation Center in Milltown, 715-825-5550.
