Obituary for Carol L. Mangelsen

Carol Lee (Jarvis) Mangelsen was born December 20, 1947 to LaVerne and Pierce Jarvis in Frederic, WI. She was raised on the family farm east of Frederic and attended Frederic schools graduating in 1966. She moved to the twin cities after graduation and worked for St. Paul Fire and Marine. She then moved to Eau Claire, WI and attended technical college for Secretarial Science. During this time she started dating Lee Mangelsen. He proposed on her graduation day and they were married on September 27, 1969. This year would have been their 50-year anniversary. Carol and Lee lived and worked in the cities for several years before settling back in Lewis, WI where they had their children, Jenny Lee and Thomas John. When the kids started school they all moved to the Gustafson family farm where Carol was raised and she lived there until her death. She loved the farm and took great pride in the fact that she lived there all but 14 years of her life.

Carol enjoyed being a stay-at-home mom, during which time she also enjoyed gardening, canning, sewing, being a 4-H Leader, and watching and participating in the kids' activities. There were always extra kids at the Mangelsen farm. Carol would pile whoever was around into the family car to go swimming at Clear Lake or the Frederic pool. She built the best forts, and she loved playing games, especially Scrabble! There were always M&Ms in the house and she made the best chocolate chip cookies! She also spent a lot of time with her brother’s children, Patrick and Amy Jarvis, and loved them and their children as if they were her own.

When the kids were teenagers, Carol went back to work and worked for the United States Post Office, starting at the office in Lewis and then driving a rural mail route until she retired. She also carried on the family tradition of being a member of the Good Cheer Club, of which her grandmother, Edith, was a charter member.

Family was the most important thing to Carol. She was the best grandma to Ethan and Emmy and was so proud of them. She loved going to as many of their activities as she could and told everyone she could about how “wonderful” they are! She was also so proud of all of her nieces and nephews, and their children as well! She had many “extra” family members in the form of her beloved cats, her neighbors and her friends. She was a champion of the underdog, she could talk to anybody and was able to accept everyone for exactly who they were without judgment.

Carol was loving, kind, down to earth, and sneakily funny. She enjoyed a simple life on the farm with her husband and her cats. She was so special and will be so missed.

She is preceded in death by her mother, LaVerne Leep; father, Claude Leep; brother, Michael Jarvis; sister-in-law, Eleanor Colton; sister-in-law, Helen Otis; and brother-in-law, John Mangelsen.

She is survived by her husband of almost 50 years, Lee Mangelsen; daughter; Jenny (Krist) Midbrod; son, Thomas (Lisa) Mangelsen; grandchildren, Ethan and Emmy Midbrod; sister, Diane (Ron) Ackland; sister-in-law, Sheila (Peter) Berklund; brother-in-law, Andy (Geraldine) Mangelsen; brother-in-law, Peter (Carol) Mangelsen; sister-in-law, Diane (Larry) Veenendahl; brother-in-law, Lyle Otis; sister-in-law, Diana Mangelsen; aunt, Elsie Potter; and countless beloved nieces and nephews (and one grand-niece!), cousins, neighbors and friends.

There will be a visitation at Rowe Funeral Home in Frederic, WI on Friday, August 9th from 4 to 7 p.m., and a funeral service at 11 a.m. on Saturday, August 10th at Clam Falls Lutheran Church with one hour visitation preceding the service. Everyone who knew Carol knew she wasn’t "fancy”. The family would like guests to dress casually; Carol especially liked denim and plaid.

You are invited to leave condolences, memories and photos at www.rowefh.com . Arrangements are entrusted to Rowe Funeral Home, 715-327-4475 and the Northwest Wisconsin Cremation Center in Milltown.
