Obituary for Dorothy Glockzin
Dorothy Glockzin of Frederic,WI, died April 22, 2007, at Regions Hospital in St. Paul, MN. She was 89 years old. Dorothy was born on June 22, 1917, to Herman and Dorothea Gundlach in Frederic, WI. She attended Frederic Grade School in the big white building and Frederic High School. She graduated from high school at age 17 and stayed at home a year to help her dad with the filling station, which is now Frederic Stop station. In those days you pumped the amount of gas you wanted into a globe on the top of the pump, then let it drain into the tank. Dorothy was born on the farm which was where the new high school is now. She said she picked many rocks from that ground. She attended Polk County Normal School in St. Croix Falls, WI. Her class was the last one-year training, after that it took two years of education. Education was her life-long dream. Many hours were spent in night school and summer school sessions to get her Bachelor's degree for elementary education. To get through the first year she borrowed $100 from her neighbor and paid him back the first year she taught. Dorothy made sure every student got a fair shake. Many times a student would improve 2 or 3 grade levels in a year in her class. She was strict, but always had fun with the students. She never carried a grudge. She could talk with an old student and tell them what seat they sat in. She has a son, Steve, who followed in her footsteps and is the same kind of teacher. Dorothy held many jobs in the summer: waitress, telephone operator, and at Routes Food Market, where John entered her life. They were married on December 27, 1957, and operated Glockzin's Cafe for several years. Dorothy was an avid sports fan. She liked all high school football, basketball, and pro football and basketbal. She could call off the Green Bay Packers by name. The Brewers and the Bucks, and the Detroit Pistons also ranked high with her. Her TV only knew sports most of the day. She taught school for 41 years, starting at East Balsum, Apple River, Atlas, Alabama, Trade Lake and the Frederic District. She was the first married teacher Frederic had, before they had to be single. Dorothy loved flowers, birds, and the outdoors. In her early years, she was an avid hunter and fisher. She also loved dogs. Dorothy was one of Frederic's oldest native residents. She was preceded in death by her parents, Herman and Dorothea Gundlach, who immigrated here from Germany; siblings, Howard, Elsie, Martha, Erna and Kay. She is survived by her husband, John; son, Steven (Sharon); many nieces and nephews; and by her dog, Ginger. Services were held at Siren Methodist Church on April 28, with Pastor Mike Asher officiating. Vocals were provided by Greg Heine and organist was Carrie McConnell. The Rowe Funeral Home, Frederic, was entrusted with arrangements.
