Obituary for Edna M. Smith
Edna M. Smith, 101, resident of Willow Ridge Nursing Home in Amery, WI died Sunday, July 24, 2011.

Edna was born in Tony, Wisconsin on June 11, 1910 to Cora and Phil Christman. She had 3 sisters and 3 brothers. Her Dad ran a logging camp in the Flambeau Forest. Edna and her sisters were the cooks for the camp.

She married Vaughn Smith and they had two sons, Kirby and Doug. Edna was left in Tony to raise the boys as Vaughn enlisted in the service to serve his country during WWII. Upon his return to the states, both Edna and Vaughn taught in the Tony school system. Edna taught third grade.

Edna was also a renowned cook and baker. Christmas time was a very welcome time for her many friends and family as she baked over 50 kinds of cookies and candies. The church, faculty lounges, neighbors, friends and family were the lucky recipients of her tasty treats. Once she retired, she baked many apple pies and apple dumplings for the freezer. She always had cookies, bars, muffins, or pies on hand when one visited.

Edna and Vaughn also spent many months in their cabin on the Flambeau making maple syrup. Their syrup was a very special gift to friends and family. She moved to Riverbend Assisted Living in Amery, Wisconsin when she was 97 years young. She made many new friends and played a mean hand of 500. She was the “poster person” as she was the “oldest” and perhaps most active of all residents and required very little help. She celebrated her 100 birthday with over 100 friends and family. Her greatest joy these past few years were the visits from her grandkids and great-grandkids. Her eyes would light up and her smile spread from ear to ear as the young kids wanted rides on her walker! She was a great lady who shared her life with many.

She is preceded in death by husband, Vaughn; son, Doug; daughter-in-law, Bonnie; two sisters and three brothers.

She is survived by her son, Kirby Smith and wife Jane; 3 grandchildren, Sharri Cyra and husband Mark, Marilyn Smith-Salbenblatt and husband Matt, David Smith and wife Neely Orr; 6 great-grandchildren; sister, Vyrle Lemke.

Her Celebration of Life Service will be held at the Faith United Methodist Church in Ladysmith, WI (W8125 Shady Lane) on Friday, August 26 at 11:00 a.m. Visitation will take place one hour before the service. Lunch will be served following the service. Memorials preferred to the Faith United Methodist Church in Ladysmith.
