Obituary for Elmer "Stanley" Knechtel
Elmer "Stanley" Knechtel, 96, of Frederic, Wisconsin passed away peacefully September 22, 2015 at the Cumberland Extended Care Unit where he had been surrounded by loving family and very caring staff.
He was born January 4,1919 in Mahnomen, Minnesota to William and Lucette "Sadie" G. (Heimbecker) Knechtel.
After attending school at Indian Creek he joined the Army where he served from 1942 to 1946 as a nurse in Panama. Later he worked on the Grand Coulee Dam and joined the fall harvest in Langdon, North Dakota.
Stanley married Ruby Wahl on May 1,1948. Together they had four children. He worked for the Polk County Highway Department as well as farming with Ruby.
Throughout his years he enjoyed flying a plane, fishing and hunting. He was an active member of the American Legion Post 396 for over 60 years. We all enjoyed his sense of humor.
Stanley is preceded in death by his father and mother; brother, George; and sister; Gladys Mansfield.
He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Ruby; brother, Howard; brother-in-law, Mark (Lorraine) McClay; sister-in-law, Lucille (Wahl) Bublitz; sons, Alan Knechtel and Lloyd (Patty) Knechtel; daughters, Jean (Alan) Hoffman and Linda (Joe) Lang; grandchildren, Heather (Trevor) Otto, William Knechtel, Kessia (Leif) Adams, and Kyle Koepp; great-grandchildren, Grace, Isaiah, and Earlene Otto, Austin, Benjamin and Harrison Adams.
A Memorial Service will be held at the Indian Creek American Legion Hall, Post 396 (345th Avenue/County Road E and 25th Street, Frederic, WI 54837, 715-653-2671) on Saturday, October 17, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. Pastor "Arveda" Freddie Kirk will be officiating. A time of gathering with the family will immediately follow the service.
