She was baptized during a ladies aid meeting and confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church in Falun, WI. Elsie graduated as valedictorian of the Grantsburg High School, class of 1947, attended one semester at UW-Superior and graduated from Polk County Normal School, earning her teaching certificate. In the years prior to marriage, Elsie taught in one and two room school houses in Polk County including Lanesdale, Bass Lake and Oak Hill. Together, they raised 4 children. After Palmers retirement, they moved to their Red House in rural Luck, enjoying the woods, gardening, traveling, and spending time with family and friends. Elsie was interested in genealogy and this led her to learn rosemaling. She won several fair ribbons and other competitions. She was able to share her gift with others, teaching them this Norwegian folk art. In addition, church was important, and she taught many children in Sunday and Bible school, as well as acting as confirmation mentor to many. Active in Laketown Lutherans WELCA, Elsie served as president for a number of years. On May 9, 2014 she died at her daughters home in Vadnais Heights, MN after a short illness.
