Obituary for Gwendolyn Alden
Gwen Alden died at her home from natural causes on Friday, October 29, 2010 with family members by her side. She was a 36-year survivor of double by-pass surgery.
She was born July 24, 1923 to William and Alice Sahr at Frederic, and married Lester Alden on July 7, 1941 at the Methodist parsonage. Allen and Jeanne were born to this union.
Gwen and Les remained on the Alden home place for 15 years before moving to Iowa. In 1956 she sought employment outside the home. The majority of those years were with an insurance and real estate agent in Oelwein, Iowa.
Before retirement they returned to Frederic where she continued working outside the home until her heart surgery in 1974. She went on disability, but kept herself busy and knew her limitations. She loved gardening, cooking and baking, craftwork, crossword puzzles and was an avid reader. She enjoyed the peace and quiet of her home with Les.
Gwen was preceded in death by her husband, Les in 2003; son, Allen in 1006; parents; and all her siblings, Emily, Edna, Thed, Nina, Bob, Lydia (Babe), Ray, Wava, Alice and Bill.
She is survived by her daughter, Jeanne Coquyt; two grandsons; two granddaughters; four great-grandchildren; two great-grand-grandsons; sisters-in-law, Kathleen Alden and Evelyn Alden; several nieces and nephews.
After 62 years of marriage, it was their wish for a combined memorial service. Services for Les and Gwen will be held Saturday, November 6 at St. Luke’s United Methodist Church in Frederic, WI at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Frederic Kirk officiating. A luncheon will follow the service.
Burial will take place at Maple Grove Cemetery.
