Obituary for Helen M. Berklund
Helen Marie Berklund, 92, died peacefully with her husband, Raymond, at her side on January 15, 2010 at the United Pioneer Home in Luck.
Helen was born in Lanesboro, MN on February 12, 1917 to Lena and John Brekke. At the age of six the family moved to Timberland, WI. Helen was one of six children.
She graduated from Cumberland High School (3 years) and then attended Grantsburg Teachers College where she received her teaching certificate. Helen also received her education degree from the University of Superior.
Helen was married to Raymond Berklund on February 23, 1946 in Cumberland, WI. They were married for 64 years. After living in McKinley and Turtle Lake, they moved to Luck in the 1950s where they raised two sons.
Helen’s passion was teaching young minds. She taught for over 40 years, from two-room schools to Starting From Scratch, the kindergarten program in the Luck School. After her retirement she continued to substitute whenever necessary.
Her outside activities included the Legion Auxiliary, Homemakers Club, and the Eastern Star. She was a Sunday school teacher and very active in her church.
In her spare time (which there was little of), Helen loved to garden and can the fruits of her labor. Flower always decorated the landscape of the yard, and the smell of fresh cuts filled the inside of the house. Everyone admired the green thumb which Helen acquired.
Playing piano by ear and singing Gospel songs were also a very big part of Helen’s life. She would always make time for praising the Lord with her family with music.
During their marriage Helen and Raymond loved to travel. They explored numerous states as well as traveling to Hawaii, Mexico and Canada. Their greatest adventure took them to Norway where Helen’s parents were born. There they met relatives they had only heard about. What a lovely experience.
Helen is survived by her husband, Raymond; sons, David and Dennis; grandchildren, Kristopher, Andrew and Shannon; sisters, Beverly and Evelyn.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Lena and John Brekke; brothers, Merle and Sidney; sister, Ruth.
Funeral services will be held at Luck Lutheran Church on Wednesday, January 20th, at 11:00 a.m. with visitation beginning at 10:00 a.m. Pastor Norman Belland will be officiating. Music will be provided by organist, Margie Nelson and soloists, Sheila Brom and Joanne Christiansen.
Visitation will also be held Tuesday, January 19th, at Rowe Funeral Home in Luck, WI from 4-7 p.m. There will be an Eastern Star service at 6:30.
Private family interment will take place at McKinley Cemetery.
