Obituary for Irene L. Mattson
Irene Leona Mattson, Beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother passed away at the age of 88, on November 15, 2007, at the Frederic Nursing and Rehabilitation Community. She was born on September 15, 1919 to Axel and Margaret Johansen of Luck Wisconsin. She graduated from Luck High School in 1936. On February 9, 1946 she married Vincent “Bud” Mattson at St Peter’s Lutheran Church in Luck, Wisconsin. The couple lived in Frederic, where they raised their son Chuck and daughter Jeanne. After high school Irene graduated from beauty school in Minneapolis and later worked for a short time at the Frederic Postal Office. From May 26, 1958 until her retirement on April 1, 1981 she worked as a telephone switchboard operator for the Frederic Telephone Company. She was an active member of the Pilgrim Lutheran Church and the Paul G Johnson American Legion Post 249 Auxiliary. She was generous in volunteering her time for many of their activities, such as the Women’s Circles and PLCW and the Blood Bank. Irene was an avid reader, skilled in cross-stitching and other needlework. She loved spending time with her family, and being part of their lives. She enjoyed music and played the piano by ear, traveling, playing cards and socializing with her friends. Survivors include her sister Lillian Jacobsen; son Chuck (Donna) Mattson, and daughter Jeanne (Steve) Young; grandchildren, Aaron (Angie) Young, Jessica (Nick) Ballin, Mark (Teri) Mattson and Laura (Brian) Keel; great-grandchildren, Courtney and Katelyn Young, and Samantha, Natalie and Joseph Mattson; nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband and parents. Funeral services were held Tuesday, November 20, 2007 at Pilgrim Lutheran Church in Frederic, WI. The Pastor Catherine Burnette officiated. Sandy Lundquist was the organist and music was provided by the Wilson family. Pallbearers were Milton Daeffler, Brian Daeffler, Bryce Daeffler, Jim Riggott, Erik Thrawl, and Chris Jensen. Burial was in the Maple Grove Cemetery with Rowe Funeral Home in charge of the arrangements.
