Obituary for Jack (John) O. Overby
Jack passed away on Sunday, December 2, 2007, at the St. Croix Regional Medical Center at the age of 78. Jack was born on January 31, 1929, in St. Paul, MN, to Oliver and Emma Overby. He lived in St. Paul until the age of five when the family moved to the farm in Johnstown, Polk Co, WI. Jack attended Blake Lake School through the 8th grade and graduated from Milltown High School in 1947. He also attended the University of River Falls for 2 years. Jack entered the Army in 1949. While serving he was a member of the special services unit of the Combat Command A Choraliers 2nd Armored Division singing group. This group toured Germany and the Netherlands. Jack returned to the family farm in 1952 and began working in the Feed Mill for Milltown Cooperative. He continued working for local Coops of Midland Cooperative and Equity Coop of Amery, and serving farmers for over 40 years as Feed Mill Manager, General Manager and Agronomy Manager. On February 5, 1955, Jack married Carmen Thompson in Amery, WI, and moved to Milltown where they have lived in the same house for the past 52+ years. Jack loved to sing and has been a Charter Member of the Indianhead Barbershop Chorus for over 50 years and has been a member of the St. Patrick’s, Our Lady of the Pines and Our Lady of the Lakes Church choirs. He also served the church in other areas as council member, cemetery sextant, Eucharistic Minister, Lector, and a member of the Knights of Columbus. He also served on several boards and committees, including Milltown Village Board, Milltown School Board, Polk County Board of Supervisors and Polk County Department of Aging. Jack was a volunteer driver for the Department of Aging. Jack was a member of the American Legion Post and member of the VFW. He also served as a volunteer with the Milltown Fire Department for 45 years. He was preceded in death by parents, Oliver and Emma; sister, Evelyn Overby; brother, Russell Overby; and son, Mark Overby. Jack is survived by wife, Carmen of Milltown; sister, Dorothy Wilmes of St. Paul, MN; son, Scott (Julie) Overby of Plymouth, WI; son, Tom (Lorrie) Overby of Amery, WI; daughter, Margaret (Bruce) Howard of Versailles, KY; daughter, Kirsten (John) Watne of Richfield, MN; daughter-in-law, Vicki Overby of Menomonee, MI; 10 grandchildren; and many nephews and nieces. Funeral Mass was held at Our Lady of the Lakes Catholic Church in Balsam Lake on Thursday, December 6, 2007. A visitation was held on Wednesday, December 5, also at the church. Interment will be in spring, 2008, at St. Patrick’s Cemetery, rural Centuria – Milltown Township. Rowe Funeral Home of Luck, WI, was entrusted with arrangements.
