Obituary for James Edward Langel
James (Jim) Edward Langel
James Edward Langel, 57, of Milltown, Wis., died April 30, 2017, at his home of heart failure.
Jim was born Oct. 29, 1959, in Eau Claire, Wis., to Donald and Clarice Langel. Jim grew up in Luck, Wis.
Jim graduated from Luck High School in 1978. He was a manager for the football team during high school.
After high school, Jim was a licensed bartender at area taverns. Jim worked at U.S. Bedding in Luck.
Jim joined the US Navy in 1981. He was Hospital Corpsman Third Class (HM3). He graduated from basic training at Great Lakes Naval Station in North Chicago, Ill. He was stationed at the Naval Hospital in Groton, Conn.; Field Medical Service School at Camp Pendleton in San Diego, Calif.; 3rd Medical Battalion in Okinawa; the 1st Amphibious Assault Battalion in Camp Pendleton; the Naval Medical Clinic in Seattle, Wash.; and the 3rd Marine Regiment in Hawaii. He served his country until 1988.
After the Navy, Jim worked at Wood Goods and House of Wood, both in Luck.
He enjoyed keeping a great collection of vintage beer cans; traveling to sprint car and World of Outlaws races all over the Midwest; and driving his truck. He only ever wore racing T-shirts. He loved following the Wisconsin Badgers and Green Bay Packers. He had a great knowledge of everything in sports but was very modest and humble about it. He loved following Luck High School basketball and enjoyed yearly trips to Madison for the boys' basketball state tournament.
Of the 50 states, the well-traveled Jim only had four more to see – Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, and Delaware.
He is survived by his father, Don Langel of Luck; sisters Ann Langel (Kevin Pachucki) of Madison, Wis., Kay Langel of Siren, Wis., and Gail (Nathan Hibbs) of Dickinson, N.D.; niece Tatia Hibbs; and nephews Logan, Jeret and Mason Hibbs, all of Dickinson, N.D.
Funeral mass was held at St. Dominic's Catholic Church in Frederic on May 6, 2017, with Father Joseph Madanu officiating. Music was provided by Larry French and Paul French. Honorary pallbearers were Nathan Hibbs, Logan Hibbs, Jeret Hibbs, Kevin Pachucki, Daryl Bazey, and Jack Fjorden.
Military honors were performed at the funeral by the U.S. Navy with special participation by Jim's best Navy buddy, Craig Kelley, of Oklahoma City, Okla.
Interment will be at a later date in the Northern Wisconsin Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Spooner, Wis.
