Obituary for Margaret A. Ulick
Margaret Adelaide Ulick, 96, passed away on April 18, 2017 at Traditions of Frederic, Frederic, WI.
She was born on February 22, 1921 to Joy and Carl Sederlund in West Sweden Township of Polk County, WI.
Margaret was the last of their four children and grew up on her family farm in West Sweden. The Sederlund children walked together to Wood River Grade School. Together they did the farm chores which included milking cows and gardening. In high school she earned an athletic letter in skiing. When Margaret was 17 she suffered the devastating loss of her father to a heart attack. She graduated from Frederic High School in 1939. Following graduation she helped her mother and brother, Herbert farm.
Margaret married Vernon Ulick on July 3, 1940. The family was blessed with two children, Elvira Mae and Wayne Carl. Spring violets were special to her as Vernon picked them for her the day Elvira was born. The family lived in West Sweden until they bought a farm near Clam Falls in 1945. While her children were young, she was a stay-at-home mom, and when the children were older she worked at the Frederic Plastic Plant, Stokely Canning Factory and Pine Grove Nursing Home in Grantsburg. While her children were in grade school she served a term on the Poplar Ridge School Board.
In 1959 they sold the farm and purchased Pine Grove Nursing Home in Grantsburg, WI. They cared for people for 20 years and she managed the business. While residing in Grantsburg, Margaret was active in the community. She joined the Woman's Club, played in a golf league, and enjoyed snowmobiling. She hosted family holidays, grandchildren sleep-overs, and parties with her friends.
They retired to their Spirit Lake home in 1979 where they lived for 32 years. Margaret easily filled her retirement time. Because she liked to have fun, she pursued her hobbies of taking photographs, playing cards, baking, painting, golfing, fishing and traveling. She, along with her brother Herbert, took care of their mother until she passed in 1990. Throughout retirement, Margaret hosted family gatherings that always included cribbage or 500 games, loved family reunions with her cousins and children, and doted on her grand and great-grandchildren. In 2011 Margaret and Vernon moved to Golden Oaks Apartments in Frederic. There she continued to play cards, do puzzles, read books and the newspaper to Vernon, and serve up treats to family and neighbors who visited.
In December of 2016, Margaret and Vernon moved with their cat, Pudder, to Traditions of Frederic. While there Margaret made new friends and enjoyed the activities - especially the music.
Margaret was preceded in death by her infant brother; her parents; her brother, Herbert Sederlund; her sister, Grace Lombardi; her beloved son, Wayne; and her husband, Vernon of over 76 years.
She is survived by her daughter, Elvira Schmidt (Adolf) and her daughter-in-law, Kay Ulick. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Michael Ulick (Lori), Jennifer Zinck, Heather Ohly (Robert), and Dolf Schmidt (Heather). She is further survived by her great-grandchildren, Kylynn Blanche, Matthew Raymond, Kacie Donel, Sydney Christine, Joseph Griffin, Norah Mae, Dylan Joy, and Griffin Gutzmer. She is additionally survived by nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends.
The family thanks everyone for their kind thoughts and prayers. We thank the staff at Traditions of Frederic and St. Croix Hospice.
Memorial services will be held at Lewis Memorial United Methodist Church in Lewis, WI on Sunday, April 23rd - visitation will begin at 1:00 p.m. followed by the service at 2:00 p.m. Honorary Pallbearers are the grandchildren.
