Obituary for Marlin J. Larson
Marlin John Larson, 80, Frederic, WI passed away Sunday, August 14, 2011 at the Frederic Nursing and Rehab Center after a 6-month battle with cancer.
Marlin was born on November 6, 1930 to Joe and Esther (Peterson) Larson in Grantsburg, WI. He graduated from Frederic High School in 1948. He served in the Army during the Korean War, stationed in Japan as an Honor Guard. He was a life-time member of the VFW, where he held a number of positions.
On October 29, 1955, he married Virginia Maxine Johnson. To this union five children were born, Laryn (Paula) of Frederic, LaRaye of Rice Lake, Lydell (Wendy) of Frederic, LaDon (Carla) of Findlay, OH, and Lonna (Jordan) Coddington of Frederic.
Marlin held many jobs, from working the harvest fields in South Dakota to working at Peterson Lumber and Wood Products on Spirit Lake for over 30 years. Marlin and his chainsaw were hired to help clear the land for the Frederic Golf Course. As a young man he was a pinsetter at the Frederic Bowling Alley before pin setting machines were installed. Marlin rolled the first 700 series at the Frederic Bowling Alley and continued to bowl until this past year.
Marlin loved the outdoors, going for drives looking for wildlife, and especially enjoyed deer hunting. He also enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, traveling and watching sporting events. Countless hours were spent sitting on the bleachers cheering.
Marlin is survived by his children; 11 grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren; sister, Gloria Pallas of Ontario, CA; brother, Douglas (Phyllis) of Grantsburg; many other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by Virginia, his wife of 46 years; his parents; infant brother, Dale; and sister, Linda Piepho.
Visitation will be held Thursday, August 18, from 4:00 to 7:00 pm at the Rowe Funeral Home in Frederic. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am on Friday, August 19, at Grace Lutheran Church of West Sweden, with visitation one hour prior to the service. Pastor Theresa Riewestahl will officiate. Music will be provided by organist, Carol Mattson and vocalist, Andrea Lundquist. Sharon Greene will be interpreter for the service.
Burial with Military Honors will take place at West Sweden cemetery following the service. Pallbearers assisting will be Ron Hedberg, Mike Larson, Steve Larson, Jeff Larson, Roger Hinrichs and Alan Madsen.
