Obituary for Michael John Maloney

Michael John Maloney's life was defined by service – to his family, to his country, to his church and to his community. The Vietnam veteran and retired St. Paul police officer died at the age of 76 on April 26, surrounded by his loved ones in Danbury, Wisconsin.

The son of Dr. John and Margaret Maloney, Michael was born in St. Paul on May 18, 1946. He attended St. Luke’s grade school, graduated from Cretin High School in 1964 and spent the next four years in the U.S. Marine Corps at the height of the Vietnam War. His dedication to service continued when he landed his dream job with the St. Paul Police Department. His 30-year public service career included eight years in the department’s K-9 unit with his beloved dog, Callahan. When he retired in 2001, he moved to Voyager Village Golf Community in Danbury, Wisconsin, where he played lots of golf, made tons of new friends, and worked part-time as Deputy Medical Examiner for Burnett County. He retired as Chief Deputy in 2022.

As a proud Irishman, Michael reveled in his heritage and was deeply committed to his Catholic faith. That faith, along with his dear family, sustained him throughout a courageous 14-year battle with bladder cancer that eventually ended his life. He was a dedicated father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend.

Michael was preceded in death by his parents and his son Joshua and many friends and relatives. He is survived by his son Sean (Cassie); Sean’s mother Kathy; sisters Kathleen (Dan) Kelly and MaryAnn (Susan Schmid) Maloney; grandchildren Kayla, Joshua, Tyler and Morgan; nieces Shannon, Meghan and Colleen; nephew Ryan; and Michael’s longtime companion, Marie.

Mass of Christian burial will be held on Thursday, May 4, at Sacred Heart of Jesus and Mary in Webster, Wisconsin. Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. followed by the service at 11 a.m. A luncheon will follow the service at Voyager Village Country Club. A viewing will take place on Friday, May 5, from 3 to 6 p.m. at O’Halloran and Murphy Funeral Home in St. Paul. Interment will be on Tuesday, May 9, at 11:30 a.m. at Fort Snelling Cemetery.
