Obituary for Norman A. Syrjala
Norman A. Syrjala passed away Saturday, May 23, 2015 at Frederic Nursing and Rehab after a short battle with cancer.
Norman Arthur Syrjala was born August 10, 1946 in Mount Clemens, MI to Arthur Syrjala and Irene (Koivisto) Syrjala. He attended school in Maine and Minnesota before returning to Michigan to finish his schooling, graduating from Amasa High School in 1965 as Valedictorian of his class. After two semesters at Michigan Tech, he went to work at a foundry in Iron Mountain, then was a operator on the Ontonogan bridge for the State of Michigan, a truck mechanic, and worked at the James River chipper in Amasa until it closed. After some seasonal work for the State of Michigan, he moved to Wisconsin and started working as a machinist for Parker Hannifin in Grantsburg, WI until his retirement in February of 2010.
On July 31, 1999 he married Faye Swenson of Cushing, WI. He enjoyed his tractors, boats and ATVs at both the Cushing and Amasa farms. There was never a tractor show too far away for him to attend.
He was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents and a sister who died at birth, and all his aunts and uncles.
Surviving are his wife, Faye; niece, Mary (John) Lococo; nephews, Douglas (Judy) Swenson, Eric (Meagan) Swenson; great-nieces and nephews, Donna (Charles) Allen, Kristina Swenson, Ian and Aidan Swenson, Noah and Jack Budd; great-great-niece, Eloise Lococo; and many special cousins and friends in Michigan and Wisconsin.A second service will be held at Bethany Lutheran Church in Amasa, Michigan on Monday, June 29, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Michael Laakko officiating and Linda Clairmont as pianist.
A visitation was held at Rowe Funeral Home in Luck, WI on Saturday, June 13th followed by a gathering at the Cushing Community Center in Cushing, WI 54006.
