Obituary for Vernon G. Ulick
Vernon Gale Ulick, age 98, passed away on January 13, 2017 at the St. Croix Falls Hospital in St. Croix Falls, Wisconsin. He was born to Agnes Carlson Jewell and Ezra Jewell on March 1, 1918 in Clam Falls Township of Polk County, Wisconsin. His mother said, the snow was melting and the water was running on the day Vernon was born.

Vernon grew up on his mother's farm outside of Lewis, Wisconsin. His life-long love of baseball and the New York Yankees started when his mother read newspaper articles about Babe Ruth to him when he was a small boy, and they lived in St. Paul, Minnesota. He was confirmed at the Lewis Methodist Church in 1932. In high school, he was a starting pitcher on the baseball team all four years, and graduated from Frederic in 1936.

Vernon married Margaret Sederlund on July 3, 1940. This family was blessed with two children, Elvira Mae and Wayne Carl. Vern continued to play, coach and manage the Lewis baseball team in the Fishbowl League. It was long span of time because he still managed the team when his son, Wayne, played for Lewis.

Working as a construction carpenter for John Fossum was Vernon's first job. Then he worked on a section crew for the railroad. In 1945, Vernon and Margaret bought a farm near Clam Falls. While farming, Vernon also worked at the Lewis and Grantsburg feed mills. In 1959, they sold the farm and purchased a nursing home in Grantsburg. They cared for people at Pine Grove nursing home for 20 years. They retired to their Spirit Lake cottage in 1979, where they lived for 32 years.

Vernon enjoyed retirement. Mowing his lawn and blowing snow on his Cub Cadet made him happy. He fished, fed the birds, traveled, and spent countless hours in his workshop building grandfather clocks, windmills, bird houses, bird feeders and wooden toys for his grandchildren. In 2011, Vernon and Margaret moved to Golden Oaks apartments in Frederic. There he continued to follow the NY Yankees and enjoy audio-books. In December of 2016, Vernon and Margaret moved with their cat, Pudder, to Traditions of Frederic. Vernon recently received his 41st sobriety medallion with AA. He was very proud of that.

Vernon was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Adrian Ulick and Edward Jewell; his sister, Dorothy Clancey; and his beloved son, Wayne. He is survived by his wife of over 76 years, Margaret; his daughter, Elvira Schmidt (Adolf); and his daughter-in-law, Kay Ulick. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Michael Ulick (Lori), Jennifer Zinck, Heather Ohly (Robert), and Dolf Schmidt (Heather). He is further survived by his great-grandchildren, Kylynn Blanche, Matthew Raymond, Kacie Donel, Sydney Christine, Joseph Griffin, Norah Mae, Dylan Joy, and Griffin Gutzmer. He is additionally survived by nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends.

The family thanks everyone for their kind thoughts and prayers. We thank the staff at Traditions of Frederic, the Frederic Ambulance Service, and the St. Croix Regional Medical Center.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, January 19th, at 10:00 a.m. with a memorial service following at 11:00 a.m. at Lewis Memorial United Methodist Church. Pallbearers are the grandchildren, Gary Beecroft, Larry Manning, Tom O'Brien, Pete Berklund, Willie Holmberg, and Pastor Freddie Kirk.
