Garry Duane Winchell, 81, passed away Tuesday, October 2, 2018 surrounded by his family at home. Garry fought a battle for several years with Alzheimer’s disease. Garry was born October 31, 1936 in Devils Lake, North Dakota to Loyd and Mary (Schmiess) Winchell. He lived in the Sarles and Alsen area of North Dakota before his family moved to the Twin Cities area, later moving to Eureka, WI for a few years before making his home in Luck, WI. He graduated from St. Croix Falls High School in 1954. He joined the National Guard for several years.
Garry worked at Anderson Windows in Bayport, MN as a mechanic, and at a muffler shop in Anaheim, CA. He worked on the Eisenhower Lock in the St. Lawrence Seaway and liked sailing the ore boats on the Great Lakes for a number of years. He worked as a rod and chain man with a survey crew for several years before retiring at home to build his home, farm and helping to raise his family.
Garry married Carol Larsen on August 7, 1971 and they had two children, Laura and Lloyd.
Hunting in many various states was one of his hobbies that he looked forward to each year. He shot trap on a team called the Old Timers for many years. He was skilled at making gun stocks and rebuilding guns. Being outside was what he enjoyed most, whether it be cutting wood, gardening or just going for walks. Traveling throughout the United States and Canada with his family was a great time for all. Garry and Carol continued to travel after the kids grew up including taking a trip to Alaska.
He is survived by his wife, Carol; children, Laura (Joe) Kalfsbeek, Lloyd (Viet-Hanh) Winchell; grandchildren, Cheyenne, Jocelyn and Colton; twin brother, Jerry (Judy) Winchell; as well as nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Loyd and Mary (Schmiess) Winchell.
Memorial services will be held at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, 1614 270th Ave., Luck, WI on Tuesday, October 9th – visitation will begin at 10:00 a.m. followed by the service at 11:00 a.m. Rev. Roger Kastelle will be officiating.
